* Ideas from the novel-Terabithia
According to the novel- Bridge to Terabithia, the characters, Jesse and Leslie, go into their play land by swinging across with a rope. We may want to have a rope to connect 1 part of the playground to another with a mini 'flying-fox' to represent the rope. Then to add a 'bridge' to represent the connection to the play land after Leslie's death. The bridge may be a form of a slide or a see-saw. As our focus group is the emotional traumatize, we will be using nature colors(sky blue, milky white) and warm colors as warm colors represent joy, optimistic and a brighter future whereas cold colors like blue and purple may cause them to feel that they are in darkness.

* Emotional and Psychological trauma
Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinary stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless and vulnerable in a dangerous world.
Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and alone can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized
Commonly overlooked sources of emotional and psychological trauma
Falls or sports injuries
Surgery (especially in the first 3 years of life)
The sudden death of someone close
An auto accident
The breakup of a significant relationship
A humiliating or deeply disappointing experience
The discovery of a life-threatening illness or disabling condition
Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a child’s sense of safety and security, including:
An unstable or unsafe environment
Separation from a parent
Serious illness
Intrusive medical procedures | Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse
Domestic violence
Neglect
Bullying |
Emotional symptoms of trauma:
Shock, denial, or disbelief
Anger, irritability, mood swings
Guilt, shame, self-blame
Feeling sad or hopeless |
Confusion, difficulty concentrating
Anxiety and fear
Withdrawing from others
Feeling disconnected or numb |
Trauma and the body
Trauma disrupts the body’s natural equilibrium (mental or emotional balance), freezing you in a state of hyperarousal and fear. In essence, your nervous system gets stuck in overdrive. Successful trauma treatment must address this imbalance and reestablish your physical sense of safety.
You can bring your nervous system back into balance by discharging this pent-up(restrained/suppressed) energy in a physical way:
Trembling or shaking
Sweating
Breathing deeply
Laughing |
Crying
Stomach rumbling
Feeling of warmth
Goosebumps |
Trauma treatment and healing involves:
Process trauma-related memories and feelings
Discharging pent-up “fight-or-flight” energy
Learning how to regulate strong emotions
Building or rebuilding the ability to trust other people

* Playgrounds.
The positive thing about this playground is that it's filled with bright colours.It would allow the kids to feel that they are in wonderland and surrounded with fantasies.
The steps are built in a shape like a castle.
But the steps are too steep and if the kids are climbing too fast, they might miss a step and fall.
Hence, we recommend that it should be in bigger steps rather than small steps which would make them fall.
The playground is also filled with lots of colours that could help those children who are traumatised to walk out of their own life.
This is the overview of the playground in Tampines, Block 347.
For what i notice, i think if we could care more about the safety of the kids, it would make the playground a better place to play in.

* Playgrounds
Playgrounds at Upper Boon Keng Road
Basically we can see that there are a few basic colours, green, yellow, red and blue.
I think if we could add more secondary colours into this playground, it would be a much better idea.
The playground mainly consist of bright colours, yellow and orange. There are also a few rocking bunnies around the playground and i think its a great idea. When one feels that he need a rest from all those running around the playground, he could rest on the bunnies(;
Theres the monkey bars. As we are working on a playground for the traumatized children, i think we shouldn't add this into our design as it is too dangerous.
